A JOURNEY INTO THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUISITION AND PRACTICE OF SOUND DESIGN

Sound Design is a fascinating discipline that often goes unnoticed but surrounds us in our everyday lives. From enhancing the cinematic experience to guiding us in day-to-day tasks, nowadays, it has evolved into a multidisciplinary craft that combines technology, science, and art. 

 

In this post, we’ll delve into the discipline and knowledge acquisition of sound design based on a research model I designed for my MSc. The aim is to provide valuable insights into the diverse realms of sound design and the skills required to excel in this field based on my research’s bibliography and figurative examples made to create this model. 

 

The Evolution of Sound Design 

 

In the 20th century, it was the first-time sound design was recognised as a discipline when its practitioners were primarily responsible for creating sound cues and managing audio playback in theatres. Over time, this craft evolved with key figures like David Collison and Walter Murch leading the way for modern sound design in today’s cinema and other industries. 

 

Identification and Research Areas

 

To understand sound design as a discipline, it’s important to explore its roots and study its various aspects. Murray Schafer’s work introduced a sociological perspective, emphasising the interdisciplinary nature of sound design, which combines elements of technology and cultural events (creation-purpose of church bells, etc.). Accordingly, by categorising the craft’s processes and products, we can focus on the methods and the creative tools used to develop different sound models and the outcomes designed for specific industries. 

 

Implementations and Practises of Sound Design

 

Game Audio Design: In video games, sound design serves to enhance the narrative and user experience. The practitioners employ innovative tools and middleware software to create dynamic audio responses and immersive virtual soundscapes. 

Sonic Interaction Design: This emerging field marries interaction technologies with sound implementation. Practitioners create synthetic sounds (earcons) and auditory icons to convey information and enhance the user experience. Additionally, these sounds must be contextually appropriate and memorable to notify, indicate, and replicate audible information. 

Audio Branding: Companies strategically use sound for marketing purposes to differentiate their products and services, build trust, and increase their brand reputation. Sound designers use tools such as sound logos to communicate brand messages, manipulating sonic elements for memorability. 

 

Methodology

 

The research design incorporates two methods: an unstructured questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. Based on a figurative scenario, the questionnaire provides qualitative information from twelve participants, all industry professionals working in the UK. Accordingly, the following interviews allowed the participants to elaborate on their questionnaire answers. Thematic analysis was used to extract recurring themes and patterns. 

 

Results & Analysis

 

Key Findings of this study: 

Educational Background: Sound Designers come from diverse educational backgrounds, often transitioning from arts to sciences or vice versa, which are always linked with audio (acoustics, music, audio production, etc). Many reinforce their knowledge with programming (game audio) or marketing courses (audio branding) to meet industry demands. 

Software and Technical Knowledge: Pro Tools is the preferred digital audio workstation (DAW) for sound designers due to its industry-standard reputation and adaptability. Also, due to the rise of immersive technologies, knowledge of spatial audio editing and audio post-production software programs is essential.  

In sum, we observed that sound design is a dynamic, interdisciplinary field that plays a significant role across various industries. The diverse skills required and the understanding of its complexities are essential for anyone interested in this craft.
